My Reason for Writing a Historical Fiction Novel

If you hadn’t received a Bachelor’s degree in History, do you think you’d still write historical fiction? Why or why not? And how do you reconcile working as a freelancer in today’s world with writing historical fiction?

This is yet another deep question. It’s a very good question, though. Would I have written a historic fiction novel even if my degree was not in history? The answer is yes. I am a big history buff and the French Revolution happens to be my favourite period in history. It has been that way ever since ninth grade. In fact, it was my grade nine socials teacher Mrs. Sproule that inspired me to love history. She loves every thing about history, but for some reason, her lessons on the French Revolution captivated me the most. Perhaps, it was because of the guillotine.

Between classes and work I would always go to the library and read through literary books on the French Revolution. I even wrote an essay about it in the first year of my university training. Because I learnt so much about this event, it was my natural tendency to want to write a fiction novel set in that period of time.

How does my freelance writing career relate to my burning passion for history? Well, I write historical articles on suite101 and, if I get the time, I want to examine a major historical event on HubPages. My other work, though, covers a range of other topics that do not relate to history. When it comes to freelance writing, I like to expand my knowledge to other areas. Creating A Character Profile

This is called a character profile. You do not have to do your character profile in this format. You can do it in any format you wish. You can even write your character profile long hand. That is what I did. Regardless of how you compose your character profile, creating a character profile will help you to get to know your characters better.

Think of it this way. As you get to know more about another person, you get drawn into their life. That is how friendships and romantic relationships are formed. Well, this is the same with story characters. The more you know your characters, the more you get drawn into their lives. You cannot write a blockbuster novel if you do not know much about your characters. Famous authors, like J.K. Rowling, more than likely composed detailed character profiles before writing their books.

Starting out as a writer is probably more stressful than starting a job at a major banking firm.

One of the main stresses that writers face from time to time is that dreaded writers block. Getting stuck for ideas in a story or losing your train of thought in the middle of an article is a royal pain in the ass.

The hardest part, sometimes, is starting an article, short story or novel. Here you are sitting in front of a blank computer screen. You may have a five word title for your article typed across the top of your page, or you may not. Nevertheless, you have a great idea for an article, but where do you begin? This is where ideas flood your brain. All these ideas are great, but for some reason, you cannot transfer them from your brain to the computer. You want your article to be superb, one that editors and readers will not resist. So, you write and re-write your opening sentence over and over again, trying to make your sentence catchy and grammatically perfect. When you fail to come up with a blockbuster sentence, you start to get frustrated.

Here are a few things you can do to overcome writers block.

When you start to get frustrated, leave your computer for an hour, have a snack, a coffee, or go for a walk. Do any activity that will momentarily take your mind off your work. By engaging in a fun or relaxing activity, you allow your brain time to relax. That way, when you do go back to the computer, you feel much more refreshed and ready to tackle the project.

Perhaps, you are having one of those days where you turn on your computer, and the blank computer screen hinders your thinking ability. Do not despair; this happens to the best of us. Do some background reading on the topic you are going to write about. Give your self at least a half-an hour reading time. If you are not too familiar with the subject you are going to write about, you will need to know about it before you can write about it. Ideas will flow much smoother when you are knowledgeable about the subject matter.

Next, grab a blank piece of paper or two and list the main points you plan to talk about in your article in order of how the body of the article will flow. It might even be helpful to write your introduction. Sometimes, ideas flow much smoother when you are not staring at a bright computer screen.

Eat regularly and eat foods that are rich in protein, carbohydrates and protein. You should also supplement your diet with vitamin supplements. You should have at least three meals a day. If you are unable to do this, have your main meal in the middle of the day and supplement it with snacks throughout the rest of the day. Remember, that the brain needs food for thought and for energy. A healthy diet will help the brain work faster and for a longer period of time. You can alleviate writers block just by maintaining a healthy diet.

Thinking too much about what to write and worrying to much about writing an epic article or story actually causes writers block. Worrying about the outcome of your article causes stress. When your brain undergoes stress, its thinking process shuts down. Do not do this to yourself. Stress will not help you to write an impressive article. Besides, it is completely unnecessary. Just relax, write the article and go back and edit it later. After all, you will likely have to go over it and make corrections more than twice before your article is good enough to send to editors. Your brain is most relaxed when you are not thinking too much. Ideas will flow and the next thing you know, you will have that blockbuster article you set out to write.

Laying out the theme of your story is the last part of the story outline, but certainly not the least important part. Now that you know your characters as well as your best friend and know what genre your story falls under, you will need to establish a central theme of your story.

First of all, what kind of atmosphere or mood do you want to establish in your novel? Is your story going to be romantic and upbeat or is it going to be dark and violent?

In order to determine a theme for your novel, go back to your story plan and think about the plot. What conflicts will your main characters face and what will they do to overcome it? If the conflict cannot be solved, how will they remove themselves from the situation? Is the situation volatile, or is it one of those annoying circumstances where two of your main character’s friends get into a fight and cannot seem to forgive one another?

Reflecting on your proposed story plan will help you create in your mind a central theme to your story.

Here is an example.

Jill falls in love with Derrick, the hottest and most popular guy in college. After going out steady for a year, Derrick meets another girl, Julie, while exercising at the local gym in Sechelt. Her long blond curls, tall slender figure and charming and seductive behaviour puts a spell on Derrick. Blinded by his lust, he falls madly and passionately in love with her.

Shortly before they return to school, Derrick calls Jill and breaks up with her, casually explaining that he is seeing someone else without seemingly caring for her feelings. For the first while, Jill is heart broken. But, then she becomes fuming angry toward Derrick. Her anger turns into hatred and she longs to get back at Derrick for breaking her heart. So, she rallies her two best college friends, Laura and Sara, and together, the three girls’ scheme to bring down Derrick and his slut girlfriend, Julie.

The theme for this story plot would be revenge.

This is just one of many possible examples of themes. The theme of your story depends on what you want it to be.

My Writing Career Goals

I see that you’ve just graduated from college. Kudos! Assuming writing is your career choice, do you have an ultimate goal for it and if so what is it? What are you doing to achieve that goal? Where do you see yourself in 5 and 10 years?

Well, this is a very good question. I do have an ultimate goal—a big goal—for my writing career.

Dating back to the one-on-one novel writing course I did with my creative writing professor, I have well over one year of writing experience under my belt. My professional writing experience, however, started this past January. It all started with Suite101 and just expanded from there. Aside from my historic fiction novel, I do all my writing online. I now write for EduBook and blog for Outdora, a California based company that specializes in the sale of architectural accents. So, as you can tell, many of the posts on my blog are about the products this company sells.

I have some more exciting opportunities that are coming my way. I’ve been planning to write for HubPages for over a month now. I am going to put that into action very early next month. I also have another employer in Texas who is very interested in my work. I’m just waiting to hear back from them.

I’m also getting ready to send my first novel out to literary agents. I have a query letter that is quite strong. I just need to do a synopsis and a general manuscript clean up and then I’m ready to take the next big step in my writing career. I realize I will get rejections, but after all the jobs I’ve been rejected from in the past; rejections from literary agents won’t feel any different. I strongly believe that the right person at the right time will take a genuine interest in my novel.

Getting back to Aimee’s question, what am I doing to achieve my goal? Everything from writing to networking with other writers and getting known as a professional and talented writer. That is where the internet comes in handy. It is so easy for writers to have their name circle the globe. With the right skills, any writer,
including myself, can go from unknown to known.

Where do I see myself in 5 to 10 years? Well, I plan to be a best selling author. I would also love to work as an editor at a literary agency. But, these are only plans. Anything could happen in that time. Life is mysterious. I just plan to take one day at a time and work to achieve these grand goals bit by bit. I firmly believe that it takes talent and hard work to succeed. You just have to put your faith in God and have confidence in yourself.

So, I have a question for Apelle. When you write, do you become a part of your characters’ lives? Do you become so involved in your own story that you wish it and your characters are real?

Establishing The Relations Between Your Story Characters

Establishing the relations between your characters is the second part of a story outline. Here are a few things you will want to consider.

who is your main character related to? Include all family characters, such as father, mother, and any brothers or sisters your main character may have. Then, list grandparents, Uncles, Aunts and cousins, but only include those who are going to play a role in your story.

List all the primary characters your main character interacts with on a regular basis. Primary characters refer to those characters that play a significant role in the story, aside from the main character. These characters include your main character’s best friend, other close friends, boyfriend/girlfriend, husband/wife, favourite teacher, employer and/or co-workers. Parents, siblings and relatives can also be classified as primary characters. But, that depends on your story and who you want your primary characters to be.

Does your main character get along well with the primary characters? Well, yes. He or she will share a close and intimate relationship with certain friends and family members. Then, there will be those primary characters your main character will just tolerate.

Of course, your main character is not going to get along with all the primary characters. You will need to have an antagonist, the cruel primary character who always maliciously tests and bullies the main character. The antagonist may be a school yard bully, a domineering parent, or a downright cranky boss that your main character can never please. He may even be an evil dictator or a terrorist. Often, the antagonist has a group of people who support him or her. The antagonist and his thugs work to destroy the good, main character (protagonist) and, in some stories, the main character’s family and friends.

Last, but not least, list all of your secondary characters. These are the characters that play an insignificant role in your story. Some of these characters may only appear in one or two scenes, or even in one paragraph. Such characters may include distant family members, people on the street, or your main character’s local Starbucks clerk. Your secondary characters can be anyone you want them to be. Since they are not that important, you do not need to include a detailed profile on them. You may, though, want to include in your story, a brief description of their physical appearance.

Once you have completed this part, you will find it much easier to lay out the theme of your story.

Creating a story outline: The Story Abstract

If you are not willing to spend the time doing a scene-by-scene plotline, you can create a story outline instead. A story outline and a scene-by-scene story plot are two different things. A story outline is more of a general outline of what your story is going to be about.

The first step when creating a story outline is to move your story plan from your head to paper. There are three parts to a story outline: the abstract, character interaction, and the story’s main theme.

The abstract is the first part of a story outline. In the abstract, state whether your story is fiction or non-fiction. Next, state what genre your story falls under. The rest of your abstract should explain the five w’s—what, when, who, where and why.

Why is definitely a more complex question because it gets you to think much deeper about your book and story characters in a way that relates to you and your life experiences. For example, you plan to chronicle certain events of your life, but want to have a fictional character impersonate you in your story and add fictional elements to your story. Or, you just want to write a compelling and meaningful story that everyone, including yourself, can learn from. Whatever approach you are going to take, establish it in your story abstract.

Writing a story abstract will enable you to establish a deeper connection with your characters and your story in general. After doing this you will be more ready to move on to part two of your story outline—your characters’ interaction with other characters.

Starting A Book: Having a Story Plan

As I’ve mentioned before, starting a book is not as easy as you think it is. There is a lot you need to think about before you write the first word of chapter one. First of all, what is your story going to be about? Is it going to be fiction or non-fiction? Where is the story going to take place? When does it take place? Who are your main characters and why are you writing this story?

What is motivating you to write this story? What is your story plan? These are additional questions you should consider. You do not need to outline your plot in detailed scene-by-scene descriptions like I have unless you have a theme, timeline and know what genre your story will fall under, but have no story plan. A ‘story plan’ is a general knowledge of main characters, characters’ hometown and events that characters experience of which build to a climax as the story moves forward. More than likely you do not know your entire story plan offhand, but you probably have a strong idea of what your story plan is. As you write your story, you most likely will not follow your story plan in the exact way you imagined it. A story plan is a general guideline to use as you write your story.

When I first started my historic fiction novel, I used my scene-by-scene plotline as a general guideline to piece the story together and help it flow along. But, from the seventh chapter on, I no longer used it, as new and exciting ideas came to me more readily. So, now I’m thinking that a detailed scene-by-scene, chapter-by-chapter plotline of my entire book was a waste of my precious time. You can spend all the time in the world doing what I have done. But, I strongly recommend that you do not plot your entire novel.

On the other hand, I do believe it is necessary to plot at least the first three chapters of your novel. This will help stimulate ideas and if you are completely stumped when starting your first chapter you can always refer back to your notes. This will generate new ideas and help you move the story along.

At the same time, always be open to change. As you write your first chapter, a new idea may come to you that may completely change the course of your story. Most often, new ideas are much better than old ideas. So, if you are half way through your first chapter, and all of a sudden you decide you want to start your story with your main character Bob falling in love with his stunningly attractive co-worker, Lisa, and not his life-time friend, Jane, throw away what you have and start over using that new idea. Yes, this will be more work, but it just might work for the better. It is always necessary to take chances. Be prepared to re-write your first chapter three times or more. This is a very common thing when starting a book, especially when it is your first one.

Remember, the first chapter of your novel is the first chapter a literary agent will look at once he has expressed an interest in your story after querying him. The last thing you want for him to do is throw your manuscript onto the slush pile. An engaging opening sentence and chapter will entice him to read your entire manuscript.

Starting a Book: My Experience

Starting a book is never an easy task, especially if you are a first time author. I just completed my first historic fiction novel and believe me, starting the book was not as easy as 123. Let me first tell you a little more about my experience.

For the longest time I’ve had this tremendous interest in early modern France. Why the French interests me above any other country, I cannot explain. All I know is that I spent number of years trying to construct an intense and engaging fictional story set in that period of time.

Finally, in my second year of post secondary education training, the perfect story finally came to me. The next thing you know, I’m doing more research on the history of France, writing down a complete list of all my characters’ names and providing short descriptions about their physical appearances, personalities and social status in 18th century French society. From that point it took me a year to complete a full scene-by-scene story plot line.

After I completed the plot, I thought that starting the first chapter was going to be a breeze. Wrong! I started the actual writing of my book when I was about to enter my fourth year of university. At that time I had no professional writing experience. I didn’t even have that much experience in writing creatively. All I knew how to do was write academic papers. I was just lucky I had a creative writing professor who was interested in my story.

It wasn’t until the winter semester of 2008, a year and a half later, that I was accepted to do an independent novel writing study with my creative writing professor, Dr. Robert Budde. Needless to say, I didn’t apply to do this independent study course until November of 2007.

Prior to the course, I believed the first six chapters of my novel was good the way I wrote them and so I would breeze through the Independent study and finish my book in time for graduation. I was wrong again.

I spent at least half of the semester rewriting my first and second chapters. The following four chapters weren’t quite as bad off as the first draft of my first two chapters, but they still needed an extreme makeover. I was worked to the bone that semester. But I must admit that I came out of the course with a much stronger story beginning and with much better writing skills. I have Dr. Bob Budde to thank for pushing me and working me to become a better and more engaging writer.

Even though my book has not been published yet, the fact that I have completed it has given me valuable writing experience and knowledge of how to write a fiction novel.
